Alaska Native Review Commission records, 1983-1985.

The Alaska Native Review Commission Records consist of transcripts of all the hearings conducted by the Commission, a subject index to the hearings, and the recording logs that were kept by the person responsible for recording each of the hearings. This group of materials provides an invaluable record not only of the work of the Commission, but also of attitudes and aspirations of Alaskans from all over the state in a wide variety of land and governance issues. In addition to the hearing transcripts, the collection contains correspondence of the Commission, complete and well organized files of press and media materials about the Commission, and a group of reports and papers gathered by the Commission's staff. These reports, both published and unpublished, provide information that the Commission staff used in preparing for the hearings. A number of the papers were written specifically for the deliberations of the Commission and were presented at either the overview hearings held early in the life of the Commission or at the issue specific roundtables which the Commissioner held later. The collection also contains a few portrait photographs of Thomas Berger and a substantial number of unidentified slides which appear to have been taken at a hearing or at several hearings which the Commission held, probably in Anchorage. Also in the collection is a near final version of "Village Journey" and correspondence related to its publication.
